INAPI’s History

The Algerian National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI) , is a public industrial and commercial institution (EPIC) with legal status and financial autonomy, operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry and Mines.

INAPI’s mission is to protect industrial property rights by offering public services for the registration of patents, trademarks, industrial designs and models, geographical indications, and integrated circuits..

The Institute was created by Executive Decree No. 98-68 of February 21, 1998, which established its status following the restructuring of the previous institution that managed both industrial property and standardization.

Since Algeria’s independence, responsibility for industrial property has been assigned to different institutions:

  • 1963 : National Office of Industrial Property (ONPI)
  • 1973 : Algerian Institute of Standardization and Industrial Property, combining standardization and IP activities
  • 1986 : Some industrial property functions were transferred to the National Center of the Commercial Register
  • 1998 : All industrial property-related activities were unified under the newly created INAPI, marking a full reorganization of the field under the authority of the Ministry of Industry.
